Law Firm Workshops
Acquiring and maintaining proficiency in legal writing can be critical in the legal field, whatever the area of practice. Often, law students graduate with minimal or mediocre skills and still need instruction as young lawyers. Some have not had the opportunity to write multiple drafts or to learn and practice proper citation form. Additionally, more seasoned attorneys frequently benefit from revisiting this area to hone their skills and perhaps change old habits.
As a law professor—besides teaching legal writing (including grammar, style, tone, and organization), analysis, citation form, editing, and proofreading—I have prepared presentations as a guest lecture for advanced moot court and law review students. These two types of legal writing (court documents and law review articles) require the use of different writing techniques, including citation form. And court documents themselves vary in citation form, depending upon whether they are state or federal pleadings, motions, or briefs.
I can conduct writing and/or citation workshops at your firm. The focus and length is up to you. It can comprise of anything from a presentation to a skills workshop with feedback. It can be geared toward new associates or even legal assistants. Students who have taken my advanced legal writing course in their 2L and 3L years have benefited greatly on the job. In fact, one new graduate wrote in an email to me, “I’m putting into practice a lot of the techniques you taught us. The things I learned in your course are already proving to be beneficial.”
